A few months ago we did a Wellness Workshop with the School of Cooking at Martin’s Super Market in Stevensville, as we do every month. The topic was From Memory to Alzheimer’s, and we covered the progression of complications while also providing lifestyle strategies for healthy brain and mind.

Whereas there are many supplements that show positive results in supporting memory as well as slowing down cognitive decline, there was one food/supplement that stood out as a foundational necessity for healthy brain function -fish oil!

Fish oil contains the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA (Eicosapentoenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), which are largely responsible for the multitude of benefits found with fish oil.

For instance, research has shown that people age 85 who eat fish regularly have a 40% less risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients have 30% less DHA, and patients who had lower levels of omega 3s EPA and DHA in their blood had a 67% greater likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease.

Research out of UCLA has shown that patients’ mild cognitive impairments treated with fish oil have shown a reduction in both amyloid-beta plaques and brain inflammation, components of Alzheimer’s disease.

Fish oil makes B vitamins work better. Researchers at Oxford University found that B vitamin supplements had little to no effect on memory and cognition in people with low levels of omega-3, although for those with high baseline omega-3 levels, B vitamins were very effective in preventing cognitive decline.

Fish oil is a must for kids and newborns too, as it has been shown to support learning and concentration in children, and is regularly recommended for expecting mothers to support their newborns’ brain health.

The benefits of fish oil don’t stop with brain and memory. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil have shown to diminish plaque buildup in arteries, lower triglycerides, enhance insulin function, support immune health, lower blood pressure, make blood less likely to clot, are important for energy production, work as great anti-inflammatories, and more.

As you can see, 0mega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil are truly a foundational nutritional element we can incorporate for many benefits, although quality is critical. Many fish oil supplements can actually go rancid on the store self, waiting for you to purchase them, while many can be filled with toxins such as heavy metals, PCBs, E. coli, yeast, molds and more.

This is why Martin’s Pharmacy recommends fish oil supplements from Pure Encapsulations, as they are highly tested to assure you get quality and purity.
